Some say that they will never sell their automobile because if they lost or sold their, so called, baby, it would be like losing a best friend or losing a part of themselves. My car is not my best friend. It is a machine that takes me to where I want to go. As such, it costs money to keep it in proper working order and to buy the fuel to put into it. You must also have automobile insurance and a license in which to operate the motor vehicle if you are not wealthy enough to hire a person to drive that motor vehicle. Be that as it may, for any reason a person might own and drive an automobile that is very old. Because of their extreme age such automobiles are referred to as being antiques. Yes, a person who buys a new automobile each year or sooner between purchases might believe that a car that is older than two years is an antique. Then again, an automobile that is expensive to operate because of ever rising fuel costs and the lack of fuel the efficiency of the automobile makes it less desirable to drive, since there are newer and more fuel efficient automobiles that are available for purchase. Yes, it is also difficult to find replacement parts for such an automobile if it is old and few people still own and dive that particular make and model year automobile. And yet, some people still own and drive one or more of those, so called, muscle cars, in spite of the fact that such automobiles burn a gallon or more of gasoline just to travel as far as eight miles or less. From my point of view, an automobile that burns a gallon of fuel or more in which to travel less than twenty miles is most certainly an antique automobile. Only a fool or a person who cannot afford to purchase a more fuel efficient automobile for regular use drives such a motor vehicle. So too, many old motor vehicles are on display in museums, along side of the rest of the antiques of the industrial revolution, like steam locomotives, bi-planes and used space capsules. People see the cutting edge of technology of past years, but that technology was replaced by newer and better forms of transportation. As such, a collector of antique automobiles is a collector of old automobiles that might still be able to transport people from one place to another place or simply be in a museum or some such place where the owner charges an admission fee to people who would like to see those outdated motor vehicles. To me, antiques are items that still look like new, relatively speaking, and still retain their utility, like furniture, silver wear, works of art, jewelry, etc. So, when a person tells you that his or her own automobile is an antique, that is just another way to say that they own a motor vehicle that is expensive to drive and also expensive to insure and repair.
